If you believe all the reports surfacing over the last 24 hours, that "12-18 month window" the Big Ten was supposedly working with has been thrown out. Conference expansion has become a high stakes game, with so many moving parts, that the first group to pounce will reap the most rewards. In fact, we could have some significant changes in the landscape as soon as this week.
Despite a potential Pac-16 being all the rage just a few days ago, it now appears as if the first move may come from the Big Ten. The Omaha World Herald is reporting that Nebraska will accept their invitation as soon as Friday of this week. Missouri would likely head in that direction as well, but university officials have refused to comment so far.
Amid all this speculation, another one of the leftovers, Iowa State, is complaining like the fat kid who got picked last for every game when we were in elementary school. And enlisting the help of their state's governor. Yeah, like that will help.
“There needs to be more fairness in all this to everyone concerned,” [Iowa Gov. Chet] Culver said in an interview Tuesday with the Des Moines Register.Sorry Governor, but fairness went out the door when Temple was kicked out of the Big East even though the conference could have used a few more teams after being raided by the ACC a few years ago.
So Friday? Okay. Good. Now we know when to clear our schedules.
